Secondary effects:
10600 people moved away which caused population decline
1240 buildings had to be demolished in the city centre
Loss of tourism income
Small businesses out of action which led to job losses
Short term responses:
Money sent from around the world ($5 million from Australia)
Chemical toilets for 30,000 people
Rescue crews sent from USA, Japan and UK
Long term responses:
Water and sewage restored within 6 months as well as 80% of the roads
New planning and prevention laws to stop it happening again
