Timeline
2nd Nov - Starts as an area of low pressure several hundred km ESE of Micronesia
3rd Nov - Moves west and develops into a tropical depression
4th Nov - Becomes a tropical storm
5th Nov - System began an rapid intensification that brought it up to typhoon intensity
7th Nov - Landdall in Eastern Samar
10th to 11th Nov - Reaches Vietnam and weakens in intensity
Causes
Tacloban - 5m storm surges and 400mm rainfall flooded an up of up to 1km inland
Category 5 storm
Almost 10% of pop affected
Considered an LIC during event (Philippines)
PRIMARY IMPACTS
- 90% of tacloban was destroyed
- 6190 people died
- 4.1 million people made homeless
- $12bn cost
- 1.1 million tonnes of crops destroyed
- 600,000 ha of farmland affected
- Rice and seed stocks squandered - $53 million loss
- 1/3 of fisherman lost their income - $724 million loss
SECONDARY IMPACTS
- Survivors fought for food and supplies - 8 died in a stampede for food
- Seawater, chemicals and sewage contaminated water supplies
- Oil tanker ran aground causing 800,000 litres of oil leak contaminating water
- Widespread looting
- Thousands of trees uprooted leading to a massive release of CO2 and loss of habitat with result effects on wildfire
