Types,Structures and Functions of blood vessels Flashcards
What is the function of arteries?
To take blood away from the heart to the body
What is the function of veins?
To bring blood back to the heart to be pumped to the lungs
What type of blood do arteries carry?
oxygenated
What type of blood do veins carry?
deoxygenated
What is the function of capillaries?
to enable exchange between water, oxygen, CO2, nutrients etc between blood and surrounding tissues. It also picks up waste products
What sort of pressure do arteries carry blood under?
High pressure from ventricular contractions- needs to travel around the entire body
What sort of pressure do veins carry blood under?
low pressure
What is the structure of a capillary?
one cell thick to allow diffusion to take place between blood and surrounding tissues
What is the structure of a vein?
thin wall
large lumen (room for blood to flow through)
valves to prevent backflow
gravity and valves assist veins to travel back to the heart
What is the structure of an artery?
thick wall (withstand high pressure)
narrow lumen
no valves (will not backflow- essentially travelling downwards)
elastic fibres to help with pressure and control diameter of artery
