Types Of Vaccines Flashcards
Live attenuated
Made by passing the virus through a series of cell cultures or animal embryos which makes the virus unable to replicate in human cells but is still recognized by the human immune system
Protection usually outlasts that provided by a killed or inactivated vaccine
Inactivated/killed
Inactivated by heat or chemicals such as formaldehyde or formalin
Destroys viruses ability to replicate but keeps it intact so that the immune system can still recognize it
Provide shorter length of protection thus likely to require boosters
Toxoids
Made by inactivating the toxin that causes disease symptoms by chemical
Subunit/conjugate
Subunit vaccines Contain only pieces of the pathogens
Can be an isolated protein or via genetic engineering
Conjugate vaccines are made by combining 2 different components using pieces of the coats of bacteria - create strong responses
Adjuvant
A substance that is added to a vaccine to increase the body’s immune response to a vaccine
