types of studies Flashcards
1
Q
CORRELATIONAL STUDIES
A
- analyse association between 2 variables (covariables)
- correlation hypothesis needed
- illustrate with scatter diagrams
✅find trends, procedures can be repeated
❌jump to casual conclusions, intervening variables (lack validity)
2
Q
CONTENT ANALYSIS
A
- indirect observation
- e.g. analysed 170 british tv ads for gender stereotypes over a week (ignoring animals/kids) + recorded frequency of behaviour
✅ecological validity (based on what ppl do)
❌observer bias (interpret diff)
3
Q
CASE STUDIES
A
- detailed study of single individual/event from diff sources
- organised findings
- longitudinal (usually)
✅rich in depth data
❌hard to generalise unique cases, rely on past events = unreliable
4
Q
LONGITUDINAL STUDIES
A
- research over long period of time to see how people change
✅control p’s variables
❌become aware of aims, time consuming, boredom effect
5
Q
CROSS SECTIONAL STUDIES
A
- younger + older compared to investigate age on behaviour
- may look at other things not just effect of time e.g. groups of people in society
✅quick (less than year)
❌p’s may differ more than just behaviour e.g. more money
