Normal Mole
small brownish spot on the skin ranging in color from pale tan to brown or bluish black.
NOT a type of skin cancer
Basal Cell Carninoma
light, pearly nodules
ex:
-sores
-reddish patches
-smooth growth with an elevated border
(most common and least severe)
Squamous Cell Carcinoma
scaly, red, or pink papules or nodules
(also appear as open sore/crusty areas)
-can grow and spread in the body
more serious than basal cell carcinoma
Malignant Melanoma
black or dark patches on the skin, usually uneven in texture, jagged/raised
(may have surface crust/bleed)
least common but most serious as it can spread quickly
100% fatal if left untreated
(early detection and treatment can result in a 94% 5 yr survival rate, but drops (62%) once reaches lymph nodes
People with light skin and a tendency to burn with sun exposure are more susceptible to skin cancer.
