Types of Services & Vessels Flashcards
Liner Services
Operate on a fixed schedule, whether full or not. Majority of container ships operate liner services.
Tramp Vessel
Only sail when there is sufficient cargo on board, don’t operate on fixed schedule. Generally seasonal & carry bulk
Breakbulk
Cargo not compatible with limitations of cellular vessels.
Cellular Ships
Ships designed to carry shipping containers (also called container ships/vessels)
Conventional Cargo Ships
Flexible & multipurpose, designed to be self-sufficient & equipped with cargo handling equipment. Used for transporting loose/breakbulk. Good for developing countries without the infrastructure to accommodate container ships.
RoRo
Roll ON, Roll Off - carries nonstandard cargo, loaded either by mobile equipment or self-propelled. (e.g. cars, trucks & tractors). Some are specialized to have railway rails for locomotive transport.
RoLo
Roll On, Lift Off - Accommodates roll on and lift on cargo
PCC
Pure Car carrier
PCTC
Pure Car/Truck Carrier
LASH Vessels
Lighter Aboard Ship - Loads barges onto vessel which become hold of the vessel. Specialized transport including pre-fabbed industrial complexes, very heavy machinery & extra-oversized equipment. Self-sustained , limited to key trade routes, little demand.
Semi-Submersible Vessels
Designed to carry oversized cargo to destination, then lowers itself to allow the cargo to be floated off. Commonly used in offshore regs & safety vessels, also for transport of boats.
Heavy Lift Vessels
Designed to move very large loads that cannot be handled by standard equipped ships.
Bulkers
Bulk Carriers - Carries raw, dry cargo such as coal, iron ore, grain, Sulphur & scrap metal.
Tankers
Designed to carry liquid cargo. 2 types. Crude (carries crude oil) and clean products (carries refined products like petrol, kerosene & other fuels)
