ACBPS
Australian Customs & Border Protection Service - Manages security & integrity of Australia’s borders.
Agent
A person authorised to transact business for and in the name of another person or company.
AQIS
Australian Quarantine Inspection Service - Government body protecting Australia from contaminated fauna & flora
B/L
Bill of Lading - Acts as receipt for the cargo, issued by the carrier. Contains the terms of the contract of carriage & is a document of title to the goods.
Bonded Warehouse
A place of security approved by the custom authorities for the deposit, keeping & securing of goods liable to excise duty, without payment of this duty.
Box
Colloquial name for a shipping container
Break Bulk
Goods shipped loose/in individual units
CAN
Customs Authority Number - Number given by customs upon the clearance of export goods.
Cartage
Refers to the intra-city haulage of goods on trucks
CEU
Car Equivalent Unit
CFS
Container Freight Station (packing depot)
COO
Certificate of Origin - Document certifying the country of origin of goods which is normally issues or signed by a Chamber of Commerce or Embassy
CI
Commercial Invoice - Formal record of a transaction between importer & exporter. Who bought what and from who. CI is the final copy of the invoice and cannot be altered.
CRN
Customs Register Number - number allocated by customs to an export agent or freight forwarder for use when exporting goods on the same shipment from more than one shipper.
Cut Off Date
The last date for which goods can be accepted for a nominated vessels sailing.
CNEE
Consignee - The buyer/client, having legal title to the goods.
CNOR
Consignor - Shipper
Consignment Note
Describes a consignment moving from one point to another, also known as advice or dispatch note or con note.
CTO
Container Terminal Operator (wharf/port/berth)
DAFF Biosecurity
Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry - aims to protect and enhance the sustainability, profitability and competitiveness of Australia’s agriculture, food, fisheries & forestry industries.
Demurrage
A storage fee that occurs when a containers “free time” has been exceeded.
EDO
Electronic Delivery Order - document given to the party surrendering the original B/L, authorizing them to take delivery of the goods.
Excise Duty
A tax on certain goods produced or manufactured in Australia. Incl. Alcohol, fuel, petroleum & tobacco.
Drawback
Repayment of a duty upon re-exportation of goods previously imported
Duty
A particular percentage (depending on commodity) of the FOB value, which is paid to the government. FOB value is the cost of the goods + charges to get goods onto vessel.
ETA
Estimated Time of Arrival - Expected Date/hour the goods will arrive at a nominated point/port
ETD
Estimated Time of Departure - Expected date/hour the goods will depart from a nominated point/port
FAK
Freight, All Kinds - FCL of mixed shipments for different consignees.
FCL
Full Container Load - Shipper utilises all the space in a container which he packs himself.
FCX
FCL shipments from multiple suppliers for the one consignee
Flat Rack
Container bottom specifically for heavy lifts and over width cargo. Noncontainerizable cargo can be accommodated on several flats positioned side by side.
Freight
The amount of money payable for the carriage of goods. Sometimes erroneously used to describe the goods, which are more correctly described as “cargo” in marine transportation.
FI
Forwarding Instruction - Provides details of the parties involved, the cargo, and its transportation requirements.
GP
General Purpose - A closed steel container for the carriage of all types of general, non-hazardous cargo.
GST
Goods & Service Tax - 10% of the CIF value + duty amount. (cost of goods, marine insurance & freight amount to destination port) + duty.
Hazchem Code
Hazardous chemical code placed on tankers carrying dangerous chemicals.
Hi-Cube
Container which is slightly (bigger) higher than a GP container.
HBOL (HBL)
Contract between the supplier/consignee. Issued by a freight forwarder or consolidator.
ICC
International Chamber of Commerce - Organisation designed to promote international trade & growth.
IMDG Code
International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code - contains the IMO recommendations for the carriage of dangerous goods by sea.
IMO
International Maritime Organisation - a UN body charged with the duty of making safety and anti-pollution conventions and recommendations concerning sea transport
Incoterms
List of standard terms stated by the ICC for all foreign trade contracts, lists the respective responsibilities of the buyer and seller.
L/C
Letter of Credit - a contractual commitment by the buyer’s bank to pay once the exporter ships the goods and presents the required documentation to the exporter’s bank as proof.
LCL
Less than Container Load - When goods do not fill an entire container. The consignee only pays for their portion of the container space.
Manifest
List of goods or passengers on a vessel/aircraft
Notify Party
The party that receives the cargo arrival notice
OOG
Out of Gauge - Goods whose dimensions exceed those of the container in which they are packed.
PKL
Document required by AQIS which states how the shipment has been packed with regards to straw, timber and bark. The packing declaration must be completed in full including a numerical link i.e. container or bill number and issued on suppliers own letterhead to be accepted by quarantine.
POD
Place of Discharge - The place where goods are discharged and carriers’ liability ends.
PRA
Pre Receival Advice - The electronic lodgment to the wharf for notification of a container coming in for export.
PCTC
Pure Car &Truck Carrier
RO/RO
Roll On Roll Off - A vessel onto which goods can be driven, via ramp
Reefer
Refrigerated Container - Controlled temp containers, usually transporting food & drink.
Shipper
Person who tenders the goods for carriage, not to be confused with the party issuing the bill of lading or the vessel operator, who is the carrier.
TEU
20ft Equivalent Unit
Transshipment
When cargo is discharged from one ship and loaded onto another. Used as a cheaper alternative OR if there is no direct route between origin & destination. In order to reach a port of no direct service or as a cheaper alternative to the direct service.
WCI
World Container Index
Waybill
Equivalent to Bill of lading, but for air freight. Acts as receipt of goods and evidence of the contract for carriage, for airfreight only.
DG
Dangerous Goods - Goods that are a risk to health, safety, property or the environment.
HS Code
Harmonized System Code - Global system used to classify goods.
Detention
The length of time allocated for collecting CNTR from port, unloading it and returning it to the port.
EBIT
Earnings Before Interest & Tax
Port Pair
Two ports that are involved in a specific trade route/lane. Origin & Destination Ports.
GRI
General Rate Increases - Periodic increase of rates. Influenced by cost of fuel, shipping capacity, market cost etc.
POL
Port of Loading - The port that the goods are loaded onto the vessel
Free Time
The length of time that a container can be stored at the port, free of charge.
Detention Charge
An extra fee, charged if the container is not returned to the port in the allocated time frame.
Cross Dock
When goods are unpacked at a facility, transferred onto delivery vehicle (truck, van etc.) and then sent straight out to the destination. Facility doesn’t actually “receive” the goods into warehouse - unpack and send only,
BCN
Buyers Consolidation - When buyer has several LCL shipments, can be consolidated into one FCL - saves time, less risk & can be cheaper.
Seal #
The number engraved on the containers tamper proof seal. Number must match the one on the documents, otherwise it has been tampered with.
ICD
Inland Container Depot - A dry port that handles containers, transporting them to vessels by road or rail.
AP
Account Protection - Agreements with shipping lines to protect space on vessels (guaranteed TEU). Specific TEU, ports & routes vary depending on agreement.
W/M
Weight or Measurement - Cost is calculated on either per tonne or per cubic meter, whichever is greater.
SBL
Switch Bills of Lading - A second bill of lading that replaces the first
Cleanskin
All docs & labels and evidence of supplier are removed from the package prior to delivery at final destinatin. This is done when the consignee has sold the goods and doesn’t want the purchaser to know where the goods are supplied from.
Triangle Shipment
When goods are sold during the shipment. Uses a switch bill of lading to update the changes such as new consignee, to show who is liable for the goods.
Doors Cab
When the container is positioned on the trailer so that the doors face the cab of the truck
Doors Rear
When the container is positioned on the trailer so that the doors face the rear of the truck.
Drop Trailer
When the whole trailer is disconnected and left behind - rather than just removing the container
Volumetric Weight
The calculation of weight based on its cubic metreage. (1cbm = 167kg)
UN Number
Shows that the goods are hazardous and identifies the DG.
Curtain Sider
When the sides of the truck are curtained to allow side access to load/unload goods
Low Loader
When the trailer is below standard height to allow for taller goods to be carried, without exceeding height restrictions.
