types of sentencing
A
depends on crime and seriousness
- common sentences: fines
- life sentences: murder / rape

custodial sentences
A
- imprisonment
- most serious offences where nothing else could be justified
- imposed when courts believe public protection
- length depends on seriousness
- max / min penalty allowed by law

suspended sentence
A
offender not sent to prison unless convicted of a further offence in a time period

determinate sentence
A
sentence of imprisonment for a long period of time
- first half served in custody and second half on license
- can be imprisoned for breaching license conditions

extended sentence
A
- sexual or violent offence / max penalty is no more than 10 years
- must serve one year but can be paroled half way through

life sentence
A
- no set time
- license fir life and given a tariff (min serving period before parole)

fines
A
- most common
- fine could be unlimited
- young people receive fines which parents have to pay
- low level common crimes

community orders
A
- up to 300 hours of unpaid work
- curfew is possible
- aim to change offender behaviour and make amends to the victim and community

youth sentences: discharges
A
- minor offences
- no punishment = absolute discharge
- going to court punishment enough
- conditional discharged - if criminal commits another crime they can be sentenced for old and new crime

A
- youth offender panel
- order imposed for a first offence where the child has plead guilty
