Types of selection Flashcards
1
Q
what are the 3 types of Selection?
A
Stabilizing
disruptive/diversifying
Directional
2
Q
what is stabilizing selection?
A
Intermediate forms (heterozygous)of a trait are favored
Alleles that specify extreme forms are eliminated from a population.
Ex: birth weight and clutch size (number of offspring)
3
Q
what is disruptive/diversifying selection?
A
Both forms at extreme ends are favored (homozygous dominant and recessive)
Intermediate forms are eliminated
Ex: bill size in african finches
(theyre either very large or tiny. the large finches can eat big food. the small finches can eat crumbs. the median group have a hard time eating large food and cant pick up crumbs. so the intermediate’s fail)
