evidence for evolution Flashcards
what is the evidence for evolution’s simplest answer?
The evidence for evolution is the common ancestor.
what are the other evidences?
The others are fossil records, anatomy and embryology, and biological molecules.
how are fossils evidence for evolution?
Fossils are the remaining or traces of an organism that died long ago
Fossils show that different organisms appear at different times and places on earth.
how is anatomy evidence for evolution?
there are 3 types of structures which show relation from species to species. they are:
Homologous structures
Analogous structures
Vestigial structures
what are homologous structure?
Similar structures that occur in different specs that were inherited from the most recent common ancestor
Examples: forelimbs (arms and legs) of vertebrates.
what are Analogous structures?
structures that have similar function but do not come from the same ancestors
Ex: wings. Butterflies aren’t related to an eagle because they have wings.
Butterflies and bats both use their wings to fly but butterflies do not have bones in their wings while bats do.
what are Vestigial structures?
Have no apparent function, but that resemble structures their presumed ancestors had.
what is embryology. and how is it evidence for a common ancestor?
embryology is the study of how organisms develop. it is evidence because all organisms in beginning look similar which means they must be related somehow.
how is biological molecules evidence for evolution?
Biologists can compare DNA, RNA, amino acid sequences, proteins, and other biological molecules from many different organisms.
More similarities = more closely related
This means they share a recent ancestor.
