Types Of Sampling Methods & Research Methods Flashcards
What is random sampling?
A method where the subjects are chosen at random giving everyone an equal chance.
What is opportunity sampling?
A method where the the subjects are picked based on if they’re available and willing to take part e.g a class.
What is stratified sampling?
A method where certain groups are picked in a way that will match the population.
Volunteer Sampling
A method in which subjects pick themselves by replying to Ads or volunteering on the spot.
Experiments
It helps establish cause and effect between different events, through manipulation of different variables scientists can study their outcomes. Includes field and lab Experiments
Correlations
This is used to measure the relationship between different variables to see if they’re related. They are mostly used to ensure the validity of an experimental research.
Observations
This is used to study peoples actual behavior. Researchers watch and record notes of what they see. This includes participants and non-participant observation.
Self-Reports
Includes asking people questions about their behaviors and opinions. Involves Interviews or Questionnaires
Case Studies
This is used to study rare or strange behaviors and usually involves investigating one or a very small group pf people and collecting info about them.
What is primary data?
Data collected directly from a researcher or the ppts of a research.
What is Secondary Data?
Data is something that has already been collected and can come from things like journals articles statistics etc.
What is Nominal Data?
Number data that is used to count something e.g no of males and females in a class. Usally measured in a tally chart or pie chart.
What is Oridnal Data?
Data that involves numbers that can be ranked or ordered. Can use data collecxted from self reports observations questionnares etc.
What is Interval and Ratio Data?
Allows us to understand difference between scores not just relationship between them.
Ratio data needs to have absolute zero e.g time and for interval data the data needs to be measured in equal units e.g IQ or Temperature.
What is the percentage of chance that Psychologists accep in their research?
5%
