Formed formed by pressure or heat
can be formed by pressure from layers above or by contact with hotter material
examples include marble slate gneiss
start out as one kind of rock and then change into another kind
sometimes contain more than one rock type baked together
Metamorphic
Made from sediments that settle on the bottom of an ocean or river
formed by the pressure of many layers building up on top of one another
examples include sandstone lime stone and Coal
are formed when mud salt or other things make a natural cement that sticks layers together
contain pieces of sand soil other rocks shells and sometimes fossil
Sedimentary
Formed by the heating and cooling of magma
examples include obsidian granite and Pumice
are often shiny or seem to be full of holes
can be intrusive (cooled inside the earth) or extrusive (cooled outside the earth)
