TYPES OF ROCKS Flashcards
What are the 3 types of rocks
Igneous, Sedimentary, Metamorphic
How are igneous rocks formed?
They are formed when a magma (lava) cools down and interlocks the crystals to make an igneous rock.
How are Sedimentary Rocks formed?
Sediments of rocks pile up into oceans and lakes due to the process called weathering. Over time, the rocks will get compacted due to pressure and create the sedimentary rock.
How are metamorphic rocks formed?
They are formed due to very high temperatures and pressures.
What are the characteristics of an Igneous rock?
- hard and non-porous
- made up of interlocking crystals
- contain no fossils
What are the characteristics of a sedimentary rock?
- porous
- have grains that often don’t interlock
- contains fossils
What are the characteristics of a metamorphic rock?
- non-porous
- some metamorphic rocks have small crystals that are not visible to the naked eye
- do not contain fossils
- they often also have bands running through them
What is an example of an igneous rock?
- granite (they have large crystals that form slowly) (they are visible to the naked eye)
- basalt (they have small crystals that form quickly) (they are not visible to the naked eye)
What is an example of a sedimentary rock?
- sandstone (does not fizz with acid) (all of the particles are the same)
- limestone (fizzes with acid)
- conglomerate (does not fizz with acid) (all of the particles are not the same size)
What is an example of a metamorphic rock?
- marble (formed by the heating of limestone and chalk)
- schist (crystals are in bands or layer) (crystals are in wavy bands)
- gneiss (crystals are in bands or layers) (crystals are in layers)
- slate (formed due to the compaction of either mudstone or shale) (minerals are all in one direction)
