narrative poems
tell part or all of a story
lyric poem
expresses an individual’s thoughts and emtoions
metaphysical poetry
poems that get highly intellectual and philosophical about the nature of thought and feeling
Romantic poetry
focus on inner experience and feelings, including dreams and the subconscious - protest against classic formalism
Ballad
originally sung, folk ballads tell engrossing stories about life, death, heroism, etc.
Couplet
two rhymed lines, usually in the same meter.
Heroic couplets
express a complete thought, with the 2nd line often reinforcing the 1st line
Dramatic monologue
a poem spoken by one person to a listener who says nothing
Elegy
sometimes called a dirge, it’s a poem of mourning and meditation, usually about death or other losses
Ode
ancient form of poetic song, it’s a celebratory poem. The ode pays homage to whatever the poet holds dear
Sonnet
14 line lyric poems (square it’s a sonnet)
Villanelle
19 line poem with five 3-line stanzas and a concluding quatrain (4 line stanza)
