What is adult directed play?
Where the adult chooses the activity and tells the children how to do it.
What is treasure basket play?
Around 30 objects made of natural materials (not classic plastic toys) are placed in a low basket for a baby to explore them freely.
What is heuristic play?
A range of natural materials and some sort of plastic (not plastic toys) such as small shells or wooden rings and the children are able to play with them however they wish.
What is child directed play?
Where a one on one with a child and adult takes place and the child has control over the game or activity.
What is child initiated play?
Children can choose the activity or game and choose how they want to play with it. No adults are involved.
What is the onlooker stage and what ages does it associate with?
0-2
Babies like to watch what others are doing and are fascinated by others playing. This can also be seen in older children when they’re new to a group.
What is the solitary stage and what ages does it associate with?
0-2
Babies will be aware of others but will only engage in own play.
What is the parallel stage and what ages does it associate with?
2-3
Children play side by side, at times they notice and copy one another’s actions or try to take what the other child is using.
What is the associative stage and what ages does it associate with?
3-4
Children are very interested in other children’s play, they may share materials or actions.
What is the cooperative stage and what ages does it associate with?
4+
Children will be able to play with each other without an adult’s support.
