What is a biological parent?
A parent that provides genetic material to create a foetus as a result of sexual intercourse.

What is a social parent?
A social parent is a parent that has the same responsibilities as a biological parent however they do not share a genetic relationship with the child.
What are the 4 types of social parents?
- Adoptive
- Foster
- Step-parent
- Surrogacy
Types of adoption?
- Local: Voluntarily give up their child
- Permanent care: Under the responsibility of FACS, as they are unable to live with their birth family.
- Out of home care: Placed with authorised carers, as they are unable to live with their birth family.
- Intrafamily: Adoption in NSW by a parent or relative
What is adoption?
Permanent care provided to children who are unable to live with their birth family. New parents carry all rights and responsibilities.
What is fostering?
Alternative care provided to children as they are temporarily unable to live with their birth family. This can be for a few weeks to a few years.
What is step-parenting?
A de facto or married couple with children from a previous relationship, they become a step-parent.
What is surrogacy?
An arrangement between a couple who is unable to conceive and a woman who falls pregnant for them with the intentions of passing the child onto the couple after birth.
Traditional: Naturally conceives her own child.
Gestational: A woman is impregnated with an egg that she shares no genetic relationship with.
What is a primary carer?
Someone who provides the most informal assistance, that has been on going for more than 6 months and targeted at least one core activity e.g communication, mobility. Any informal carer is also a primary carer.
Reasons why are carer takes on the role?
- They believe they can provide the best care
- Emotional obligation
- Family responsibility
What is an informal carer? Examples?
An informal carer is any person who is giving on going assistance to another person without payment. Examples - friends, family, a neighbour
What is a formal carer? Examples?
A trained professional who provides carer through formal agencies and are paid for by the receiver. Examples - Aged care nurses, child care workers, primary school teachers.
