Types of movement at a synovial joint Flashcards
Flexion
Decreasing the angle between the bone of a limb at a joint
Contracting muscles move the joint into a bent position
a sporting example of this
Bending the arm when doing a bicep cow
Extension
Straightening a limb to increase the angle outage joint
Sporting example straightening the arm when defending a netball
Dorsi-flexion
An upward movement, as in moving the foot to pull the toes towards the knee
Sporting example toes upwards when hurdling
Plantar flexion
The toes are pointed downwards
This happens when the ankle is straightened
Example
toes pointed when diving in a pike position
Lateral flexion
The movement of bending sideways
Sporting example
Goalkeeper diving to the sidemen saving the ball
Horizontal flexion and extension
The same as flexion and extension, but on a horizontal plane
example
Bending and straightening of the elbow when it is out in front of you
Hyper extension
It involves bending the arm beyond the normal anatomical positions in a direction opposite to flexion
Example extending the arm behind the back
Abduction
Movement away from the vertical midline of the body
Example the upward phase of a star jump when the arms are up
Adduction
Movement towards the bodies vertical midline
examples
Inward phase of a side step
Horizontal abduction and adduction
This is the movement of bringing your arm across your body and then back again
examples of this
Shoulder action when performing a drive in tennis
Horizontal abduction and adduction
This is the movement of bringing your arm across your body and then back again
examples of this
Shoulder action when performing a drive in tennis
Rotation
The circular movement around an axis of a joint
Example
Turning the head sideways
Circumduction
The circular movement that is a combination of flexion extension abduction and adduction
Sporting example
Shoulder action when performing a front crawl
