They described motivation as the internal mechanisms and external stimuli which drive, arouse and direct behaviour.
Intrinsic motivation
Someone participating in an activity without external rewards.
- accomplishments = increasing level of skill
- stimulation = seeking an ‘adrenaline rush’
- knowledge = wanting to know more for performance
Extrinsic motivation
When an athletes behaviour is influenced by an external factor
- intangible rewards = parents, coaches, fans
- tangible rewards = money, trophies
Amotivation
A state of lacking any motivation to engage in an activity. It is caused by a lack of perceived competence, negative self-perception or an athlete not valuing the activity.
