Types Of Microorganisms Flashcards
What are the two types of microorganisms?
Bacteria and Archaea.
What is bacteriology?
The study of bacteria.
What are the shapes of bacteria?
Spherical (coccus), rod-shaped (bacillus), and curved (spirillum, spirochete, or vibrio).
What are Archaea?
Unicellular prokaryotic organisms.
What is unique about the cell walls of Archaea?
They do not contain peptidoglycan but a similar substance called pseudopeptidoglycan.
Where can Archaea be found?
In nearly every habitat, including the human body.
What are protists?
Eukaryotes that are not plants, animals, or fungi.
What are algae?
Mostly made of protists, either unicellular or multicellular, and photosynthetic.
What are protozoa?
Protists that make up the backbone of many food webs.
How do some protozoa move?
Using cilia, flagella, or pseudopods (false feet).
What is protozoology?
The study of protozoa.
What are fungi?
Eukaryotes that are not photosynthetic.
What are the cell walls of fungi made of?
Usually made of chitin rather than cellulose.
What is mycology?
The study of fungi.
What are viruses?
Acellular microorganisms consisting of proteins and genetic material.
