Types of Memory Flashcards
What are the 3 types of memory?
Sensory Register
Short-term memory (STM)
Long-term memory (LTM)
What is the sensory register?
- Temporarily stores information from our senses
- Unless we pay attention, it disappears quickly through spontaneous decay
- Limited capacity + V limited duration
- Info coded depending on sense - tactile, visual or auditory
short-term memory - capacity, duration, coding
limited capacity + limited duration
coding usually acoustic (sound)
long-term memory - capacity, duration, coding
unlimited capacity + unlimited duration
coding usually semantic (meaning of the info)
What are the different types of LTM?
Episodic memory
Semantic memory
Procedural memory
What is episodic memory?
- Stores realistic events with details such as, time, places and feelings
- Declarative
What is Semantic memory?
- Stores facts and knowledge, JUST THE FACTS AND KNOWLEDGE
- Declarative
What is Procedural memory?
- Stores info on how to do stuff e.g running or swimming
- Not declerative
study for sensory register
Sperling (1960) - An investigation of the sensory register:
Method:
- lab experiment
- participants shown grid with three rows or four letters for 50 milliseconds
- participants had to immediately recall either whole grid or randomly chosen row
Results:
- Only managed to recall 4/5 letters on average
- When a particular row was indicated, they could recall an average of 3 items
Conc:
- Participants didn’t know which row would be selected so the whole grid was held In their sensory register. They couldn’t report the whole grid because the trace faded before they finished recall
Study for STM
Peterson and Peterson (1959) - The duration of STM
Study for LTM
Study for different capacity of memory
