types of LTM Flashcards
1
Q
what are some strengths of the types of LTM?
A
- case study evidence - Clive Wearing - episodic memory severely impaired but semantic memories unaffected
- evidence from brain scans support there are distinct types of LTM, they demonstrate that different areas of the brain are active dependent on the type of LTM being used eg. semantic memories activate the left prefrontal cortex, this is a strength as it shows they are separate and physically distinct with different brain areas responsible for each function
- a further strength of identifying different types of LTM is this knowledge has real-world application, research has shown as people age they tend to lose their episodic memories, Belleville designed an intervention to improve episodic memories in older people, our understanding of LTM is beneficial in soceity

Q
what are some weaknesses of the types of LTM?
A
- problems with case studies - the infection may have caused changes to his brain therefore doesn’t represent a normal brain, limits what they truly tell us about long term memory
