types of LTM Flashcards
what are the 3 types of LTM?
- episodic
- semantic
- procedural
what type of information does episodic LTM store?
events from our lives
why is episodic information seen as being complex?
it is time stamped and involves several elements in one memory
what type of effort is needed in episodic LTM?
conscious
what type of information does semantic LTM store?
world knowledge
why is semantic LTM not time stamped?
it contains less personal information
what type of information does procedural LTM store?
memories for actions and skills (how we do things)
why can procedural LTM be hard to explain?
recall occurs w/o conscious awareness
what are the main evaluation points to types of LTM?
1) real life applications - Belleville (episodic memories leads to improved in older ppl w/ cognitive impairments and training)
2) problems with clinical evidence (focuses on memory damage) - lacks variable control = difficulty generalising from case studies
3) how many stores are there? - Tulving, Cohen and Squire suggest that episodic and semantic memories are stored together (declarative)
