Types of long-term memory (Bklt 2) Flashcards
Name the 3 types of LTM
Episodic
Semantic
Procedural
With which 2 types of LTM can you consciously access the information?
Episodic and semantic
Which part of the brain do the 3 types of memory use?
E: Hippocampus
S: Temporal and frontal lobes
P: Primary motor cortex and cerebellum
Describe episodic memory (3 marks)
Stores episodes (events/people/objects from our lives). Consciously recalled. Remember when they happened. Hippocampus.
Describe semantic memory (3 marks)
Knowledge of world and meaning of words. Consciously recalled. Temporal+ frontal lobes
Describe procedural memory (3 marks)
Memory of skills (walking, speaking e.g. with grammar, cycling). V little conscious effort. Cerebellum+ primary motor cortex
Outline research into episodic memory (3-4 marks)
Case study, Clive Wearing w/ damaged hippocampus. Can’t recall events from that day but can still play music. Recognises wife but re-greets her if she returns after a few mins
Outline research into procedural memory (3-4 marks)
LITERALLY the same as episodic. Clive retained procedural memories e.g. playing piano, reading music, conducting.
Compare episodic and semantic memory (2 marks)
E: Info isn’t taught, and is associated to particular events} UNLIKE SEMANTIC
Compare episodic and procedural memory (2 marks)
E: Info is not taught and is consciously recalled} UNLIKE PROCEDURAL
Compare semantic and procedural memory (2 marks)
S: Info consciously recalled
S+P: Info is taught in both
