types of long term memory Flashcards
what are the 6 AO1 points for the types of long term memory?
-Tulving’s Proposal
-Episodic Memory
-Semantic Memory
-Procedural Memory
-Neuroimaging Evidence
-Clinical Case Study Support
Who proposed that LTM is made up of different stores?
Tulving (1985) suggested LTM has three distinct types: episodic, semantic, and procedural memory
What is episodic memory?
Episodic memory stores personal life events, including time, place, emotions, and context. It’s conscious and declarative.
What is semantic memory?
Semantic memory stores general knowledge, facts, and meanings (e.g. knowing what a banana is). It’s conscious but not time-stamped.
What is procedural memory?
Procedural memory involves skills and actions (e.g. driving, typing). It’s non-declarative, unconscious, and hard to explain.
What brain areas are involved in different types of LTM?
Episodic/Semantic: Hippocampus, prefrontal cortex
Procedural: Cerebellum, motor cortex
What case studies support the idea of multiple LTMs?
Clive Wearing and HM had damaged episodic memory but intact procedural memory, showing LTM is not unitary
