Types Of Long Term Memory Flashcards
What is episodic memory?
A long-term memory store for personal events it includes events of people objects, places and behaviours and have to be achieved consciously
what is semantic memory?
Long-term memory store for a knowledge of the world this includes facts and knowledge of what words and concepts mean they need to be recalled deliberately.
what is procedural memory?
Long-term memory store on how to do things this includes memories of learning skills, we record these without making deliberate effort.
What is episodic memory?
Our ability to recall events from our lives like a diary for example when you went to the dentist or a gig you went to last week the memories are complex. for example they are times stamped. Secondly they include several elements such as people in places ,objects and behaviours. thirdly you make conscious effort to recall episodic memories.
What is semantic memory?
Shared knowledge of the world it’s like a combination of an Encyclopedia and a dictionary. contains knowledge like how to apply to a university or what oranges taste like semantic knowledge is less personal and more about facts all share
What is procedural memory?
Memory for action or skills basically how we do things we recall these memories without conscious awareness or much effort eventually. a good example is driving a car, our ability to do this becomes automatic through practice we change gear without having to recall how, these are sorts of skills you might find quite hard to explain to someone else
one strength of LTM?
The evidence from the famous case study of HM and wearing. episodic memory in both men was severely impaired due to brain damage but there’s semantic memories were relatively unaffected. They still understood the meaning of words for example HM cannot recall stroking a dog but knew what a dog was, they both still knew how to walk and speak. The evidence supports talking to a different memory stores an LTM.
Evaluate one limitation of LTM?
There was conflicting research findings linking types of LTM to areas of the brain, Brockner and Peterson reviewed evidence regarding location of semantic memory. They concluded that semantic memories located on the left side of the prefrontal cortex and memory on the right however other research links left prefrontal cortex with encoding of episodic memory and the right prefrontal cortex with episodic retrieval. This shows there is poor agreement on where each type might be located.
What is another strength of LTM?
Understanding types of LTM allows psychologist to help people with memory problems. as people aged they experience memory loss but research has shown specific topic memory and events becomes harder to recall.
