The Multi-Store Model Of Memory Flashcards

1
Q

What is the Multi store model?

A

Representation of how memory works there are three stores called the sensory register, short-term memory and long-term memory also describes how information is transferred from one store to another and what makes memories last and what makes memories disappear

Q

what’s the sensory register?

A

Memory stores for five senses such as a vision (iconic store) and hearing (echoic store) the capacity of sensory registers is huge and information last for a very short time.

Q

Explain the sensory register?

A

All stimuli from the environment pass into the sensory register this part of memory comprises several registers one of each for five senses. sensory register has a very high capacity for example over 100 million cells in one eye each storing data

Q

explain short-term memory?

A

Information in short-term memory is coded mainly acoustically and lasts about 18 seconds unless it’s rehearsed. it is a limited capacity store as it can only contain a number of things before forgetting occur.
maintenance rehearsal occurs when we repeat material to ourselves over and over again we can keep the information in our short-term memories as long as we rehearse it if we were to long enough it goes to a long-term memory

Q

explain long-term memory?

A

It’s a Permanent memory store for information. LTM are covered most semantically. psychologist believe that duration may be up to a lifetime for example, school classmates remembered their classmates 50 years after graduating according to MSM when we want to recoup information from LTM has to be transferred back into STM called retrieval

Q

what is one strength of the MSM?

A

Showing the STM and LTM are different badly found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when we were using our STM’s but we mix up words that have similar meanings when we use our LTM . this shows that STM and LTM are separate and independent memory stores

Q

one limitation of MSM?

A

That there is more than one STM store. Charlie and Warrington study client that has amnesia. The client four digit was very poor of read out loud to him but recall was much better when he read the digits to himself.Further studies of the client showed that they could be even be another short-term store for non-verbal Sounds. this shows the MSM is wrong in claiming that there is only one STM store.
