types of long term memory Flashcards
what is episodic memory?
refers to a group of events relating to a time and place. concerned with your personal experiences and context around events including your emotions. this is available on conscious inspection.
time stamped - you remember when they happened.
what is meant by semantic memory?
known as ‘knowledge’ memory. this is what you know about aspects of the world, knowledge of facts. these can be tied to episodic memories. not time stamped and less personal than episodic memories
what is procedural memory?
part of non declarative memory and refers to motor skills we have learnt. refers to knowing how to do something. automatic / action based and resistant to forgetting e.g riding a bike. recall occurs without awareness or effort
strengths of types of ltm
supported by hm - shows there are types of ltm as he maintained procedural memories but lost episodic memories
help with memory problems - memory loss in elderly is usually episodic. belleville et al (2006) devised intervention for older people targeting episodic memory, which improved their memory compared to a control group
limitations of types of ltm
there may be other types of ltm to explain how priming works on humans
research focuses on patients with brain damage, may be difficult to draw conclusions to those without
