Hinge
Allows swinging motion of either bones flexing toward each other or extending apart. Example - elbow and knee
Ball and socket
Ball shapes surface on one bones fits into cup like depression on another, allowing movement. Example - shoulder and hip
Pivot
Allows for rotation around axis. Example - top of neck
Condyloid
Head of one bones moves into cavity of another and allows for movement in two planes. Example - radius and carpals
Saddle
One bones forms shape of a saddle with other bone resting on it like a rider. Provides stability whilst more flexibility than other joints. Example - CMC joint of thumb
Gliding
Allows bones to glide past one another in any direction. Example - small bones in ankle (tarsals)
