Types Of Joints Flashcards
Fibrous Joints
- Immovable
- Held together by strong, fibrous connective tissue
Examples of Fibrous joints
Sutures where the cranial bones meet
Synovial Joints
- Contain fluid
- Freely movable
Examples of Synovial Joints
Shoulder, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles
Cartilaginous Joints
- Slightly movable
- Held together by cartilage which allows partial movement
Examples of Cartilaginous Joints
Joints between vertebrae
Name the types of Synovial Joints
- Ball and socket joint
- Hinge joint
- Pivot joint
- Gliding joints
Ball and socket joint
Bone with ball shaped head fits into the concave socket of the 2nd bone
Ex. Shoulders and hips
Hinge joints
Move in one direction or plane
Ex. Knees, elbows, phalanges
Pivot joints
Those with an extension rotate on a 2nd, arch shaped bone
Ex. Radius, ulna, atlas, and axis
Gliding joints
Flat surfaces glide across each other
Ex. Carpals, tarsals
How are Synovial Joints held together?
Ligaments (bands of connective tissue) hold the bones together at the joints. This prevents erosion from friction, there is a lubricating substance (“Synovial fluid”) in the joints
