A
Bone density is lost especially after menopause bc bones lose calcium and other minerals

A
Brittle bones

What happens to the spine?
A
- It becomes shorter
- Intervertebral disks lose fluid and become thinner
- Vertebrae lose minerals and become thinner
- Spinal column becomes curved and compressed

A
They flatten

What happens to the joints?
A
- They become stiffer and less flexible
- Fluid in the joints decrease, and the cartilage rubs together and erodes
- Some joints calcify
Effect: Inflammation, pain stiffness, and deformity of Joints

What happens to body mass?
A
- It decreases because of muscle loss
- Fat is deposited in muscle tissue, muscle fibers sink
- Muscle is replaced with tough fibourus tissue, they have less tone and ability to contract

What are some effects of losing lean body mass?
A
- Movement slows and becomes limited
- Gait becomes unsteady
- People tire more easily, strength is reduced
