Types of joints Flashcards
Types of joints:
- Fibrous joints - immovable/fixed (protection) (Ex. Skull)
- Cartilaginous joints- slightly movable (slight protection)
(Ex. Cartilage in nose or ribs) - Synovial joints - movable
Fibrous joints
immovable/fixed (a lot of protection)
(Ex. Skull)
Cartilaginous joints
slightly movable (slight protection)
(Ex. Cartilage in nose or ribs)
Synovial joints
movable
(Ex. Limb connectors)
6 Types of synovial joints:
Ball and socket - Ex. Shoulder, hip
Gliding - Ex. Tarsals (hands and feet)
Hinge - Ex. Knee, elbow
Pivot - Ex. Neck
Saddle joints (looks like a horse saddle) (Ex. Thumb)
Ellipsoid joints 2 bowls in eachother (Ex. Wrist)
Synovial joint: BALL AND SOCKET
-Ball and indent for ball
- EX. Shoulder & hip
Synovial joint: GLIDING
- flat against eachother
- EX. Tarsals (hands and feet)
Synovial joint: HINGE
- like ball and socket but cylinder-like
-EX. Knee & elbow
Synovial joint: PIVOT
- turning on pole
- EX. Neck
Synovial joint: SADDLE
- looks like a horse saddle
-EX. Thumb
Synovial joint: ELLIPSOID
- 2 bowls sitting in one another
- EX. Wrist
Periosteum
Outside lining of the bone which connects the tendon to the muscle. (Peri=surrounding & osteo=bone)
Joint cavity
Space between the bones in a synovial joint.
It is filled with synovial fluid which acts as lubricant that smoothes and provides nutrients.
Joint capsule
Bag-like outer structure surrounding the joint to protect the structure within.
Allows certain nutrients to pass through its membrane into the joint.
Tendons
MUSCLE TO BONE
Located in each end of skeletal muscles and cross joint to attach to bones
