Types of interparticle interactions Flashcards

1
Q

What is London dispersion forces?

A

Weak intermolecular forces responsible for the attraction between nonpolar molecules. These forces are temporary and very weak. They arise due to the temporary dipoles formed when electrons in adjacent atoms momentarily shift positions.

Q

What is Dipole-dipole attractive forces?

A

Force of attraction between the positive pole of one polar molecule and the negative end of another polar molecule. These forces commonly found in covalent compounds.

Q

What is Dipole-induced dipole attractive forces?

A

These forces occur due to the distortion in the electronic cloud of non-polar molecules, making a temporary dipole.

These interactions occur between polar molecules (with a permanent dipole) and nonpolar molecules or atoms that can be polarized. These forces are weaker than dipole-dipole and hydrogen bonds, but stronger than London dispersion forces
