Molecular structure models Flashcards
Chemical structurs in which covalent bonding between atoms is represented by dots, dot pairs or dashes
Lewis structures
What is Formal charge in Lewis’s structure?
Formal charge is used to figure out which structure has the lowest energy and hence is the most stable.
A formal charge of close to zero means?
Stable Bonding
How Formal Charge is calculated?
FC = (No. of valence electrons) - (No. of nonbonding valence electron) - (I/2 ( Electrons shared in bonding).
What are Resonace Structures?
Different possible arrangements of electrons in a molecular structure that cannot be accurately represented by a single Lewis structure.
These structures represent delocalized electrons that are shared across multiple atoms rather than being confined to a single bond.
Example of Resonace Structures
Benzene Ring
What is geometry and angle of a molecule with 2 bonding pairs and 0 lone pairs?
linear and angle is 180 Degree
What is geometry and angle of a molecule with 3 bonding pairs and 0 lone pairs?
Trigonal planar and angle is 120 degrees
