Types of Immune Systems Flashcards
Name the X2 Types of Immunity/Immune Systems
- Innate
- Acquired
What is the Innate Immune System and what type of response does it produce?
- Born with it (Natural)
- Non-Specific
How does the Innate Immune System protect the body?
- Physical/Natural barrier-e.g skin
- Produces:
- Immune Cells
- Complement Proteins
- Cytokines
- Acute Phase Proteins
- Inflammatory Mediators (e.g Histamines)
What type of Immune Cells does the Innate System Produce?
Immune Cells: (Leukocytes)
- Macrophages
- Mast Cells
- Natural Killer Cells (NK)
- Neutrophils
- Basophils
- Eosinophils
- Dendritic cells
State the speed of response the X2 Immune Systems produce to its first exposure.
Innate-Rapid Response
Acquired- Slow
Where is the Complement System located?
-Innate Immune System
Are Monocytes a type of white blood cell?
YES
How is the Acquired Immune System developed?
- Formed throughout life (adaptive)
- Formed from exposure-e.g development of memory cells etc.
How does the Acquired Immune System have Immunological Memory?
- After first exposure to an infection the Acquired Immune System produces memory cells.
- These memory cells allow for a more rapid response in the event of second exposure
What X3 things does the Acquired Immune System Produce?
- Antibodies
- Cytokines
- Leukocytes
- Memory Cells
What type of Immune System produces Lymphocyte B and T cells?
-Acquired
What are Macrophages?
- Leukocytes
- Detect foreign antigens, undergo phagocytosis and release cytokines.
What are Mast Cells?
- Pro-Inflammatory Mediators
- Are granulated and release histamines.
What are Natural Killer Cells?
-Cells release cytokines and cause ‘Apoptosis’
What are Neutrophils?
-Granulated, multilobed nucleus, release cytokines and form phagocytes.
