Types of Hypoxia Flashcards
Hypemic
Anemic
Hypemic hypoxia is a reduction in the O2 carrying capacity of
blood
Hypemic hypoxia can be caused by
anemia
hemorrhage
Histotoxic
poisoning
histotoxic hypoxia limits the use of available oxygen due to poisoning of the
cytochrome oxidase system
examples of histotoxins that cause hypoxia:
cyanide alcohol carbon monoxide (CO) nitroglycerin sodium nitroprusside (Nipride)
Hypoxic hypoxia
Not enough oxygen in the air
Decreased partial pressure of oxygen at altitude can cause
hypoxic hypoxia
Deficiency in alveolar O2 exchange causes
hypoxic hypoxia
Cardiovascular/Pneumothorax patients are more susceptible to this type of hypoxia
hypoxic
Stagnant hypoxia
blood isn’t moving
stagnant hypoxia is caused by:
reduced cardiac output or pooling of blood
High G forces
cardiogenic shock
Stages of Hypoxia pneumonic:
ICDC
Indifferent hypoxia
full reasoning abilities
some loss of night vision
Compensatory hypoxia
Increased HR, ventilations
slowed judgement
Disturbance Hypoxia
slurred speech impaired judgement ("drunk")
Critical hypoxia
no longer to function physiologically
death imminent
Ventilation happens in the
lungs
respiration happens in
alveoli
body cells
