Monarchy (absolute):
Rule by a King or Queen who has inherited the role and expects to pass it on to their heir.
E.g Saudi Arabia
Democracy:
Where the government is elected by the people
Constitutional Monarchy:
A democratic government that limits the control of the Monarch.
E.g Australia, Great Britain
Republic:
A country that has no monarch. The head of the country is usually an elected leader.
E.g USA, Russia
Oligarchy:
Rule of few.
E.g China
Dictatorship (Autocracy):
A country ruled by a single non-elected leader who has full power over the country.
E.g North Korea, Syria, Cuba
Theocracy:
Religious oligarchy.
E.g Iran, Vatican
Plutocracy:
A government composed of the wealthy class (similar to oligarchy)
Positives of a monarchy:
- Decisions made quickly.
- Born into the role, a belief of responsibility.
- Confidence, connection to the country.
Negatives of a monarchy:
- Leader is hereditary, there are no changes in leadership.
- People don’t have a say.
- Leaders have no experience of the real world.
Positives of a Constitutional Monarchy
- Still democratic, decisions are made on behalf of the public.
- Leader is chosen based on qualities.
Negatives of a Constitutional Monarchy:
- No use of the monarchy.
- Inefficient.
- Potential for corruption.
- Expensive.
- Can be hard for governments to act quickly.
Positives of a republic:
- Vote for individuals to represent the public.

- People’s voices can often still not be heard.
- Potential for corruption.
- Expensive.
- Can be hard for governments to act quickly.
Positives of an oligarchy:
- Can be economic benefits.
* Can act quickly.
