Types Of Fractures Flashcards
Compound/open fracture
Broken bone pierced skin , creating an open wound.
Has a high risk of infection due to open wound, will require surgery.
Comminuted Fracture
Bone breaks into 3 or more pieces.
Common in car accident or falls from significant heights.
Greenstick Fracture
An incomplete fracture - one side of bone BENDS, one side of bone BREAKS .
Common in children because children have flexible bones
Impacted Fracture
One fragment of bone is driven into another.
Often seen in falls.
Potts Fracture
Type of ankle fracture , occurs when one or both of the malleoli (bony protrusions on side of ankle) break.
Colles Fracture
A Break in the radius bone of the forearm near the wrist joint.
Hairline (stress) fracture
Small, thin crack in the bone.
Caused by repetitive stress or overuse.
Common in athletes.
Difficult to detect in X-RAYS initially.
Avulsion fracture
Fragment of bone is pulled off by a ligament or tendon.
Common in sports injuries.
Segmental fracture
Two fractures occur in same bone, leaving a segment of the bone detached.
Associated with severe trauma.
Simple (Closed) fracture
Bone is broken but skin over fracture site remains intact
Spiral fracture
Fracture that spirals around the bone
Caused by twisting of a bone
Transverse
Along the width of the bone
Linear
Fracture going lengthways on the bone
