Q

what is frictional force?

A

Frictional force is the force that opposes motion. Friction force helps us to hold onto objects without dropping them.

Q

what are some examples of frictional force?

A
  1. Climbers use apply chalk on their hands to remove moisture from them, which increases the amount of friction between their palms and the rock wall.
  2. Climbers wear shoes made of a different type of rubber which increases friction between the climber’s shoes and rock wall. Allowing the climber to press on to the foothold firmly and rock wall.

Q

what is elastic force?

A

Elastic force is the force that acts on all elastic material that is being compressed or stretched. Elastic force allows a elastic material that is stretched or compressed to return to its original shape. Elastic force acts on the opposite direction as it is being stretched.

Q

what are some examples of elastic force?

A
  1. When a climber falls off the rock wall, the rope stretches and elastic force exerted is increased, reducing the impact felt by the climber
  2. elastic force is exerted onto the spring balance which is used to measure the amount of force which is exerted onto an object

Q

what is gravitational force?

A

gravitational force is a non-contact force. Gravitational force is the force which attracts two objects together. When magma is spewed out from a volcanic eruption, its settles on a large area due to the earth exerting a gravitational force on the magma, pulling it towards its center. Rain droplets fall from the sky due to gravitational force acting on the water droplets.

Q

frictional force ( additional information )

A

Frictional force acts in the opposite of the push or pull ( force ). When a push is applied, the frictional force would be acting on the two point of contact in the opposite direction. The surfaces in contact has tiny irregularities and projections that interlock. ( Frictional force is only exerted onto two objects which are in physical contact )

Q

gravitational force ( more information )

A

If gravitational force is exerted by an object, the object is known to have weight. When two people stand close to each other, they are both simultaneously exerting gravitational force onto each other. Which cancels them out. Therefore, the two people do not stick / go close to each other as there is no form of attraction.

Q

Benefits of frictional force? ( 4 )

A
  1. frictional force allows us to hold onto a pencil and write
  2. There is friction between the floor and our shoes, therefore we do not slip and fall as on a microscopic level, the surface have uneven
  3. Friction enables a match to be struck
  4. Friction also enables vehicles to stop and slow down

Q

Negative benefits of frictional force? ( 2 )

A
  1. frictional force produces heat and reduces efficiency. As some of the input energy released is wasted as thermal energy instead of useful output energy.
  2. frictional forces causes machines and daily objects to wear and becomes unusable after some time
