Q

What are tropical cyclones and how do they affect us?

A

Tropical cyclones are intense storms that happens over warm oceans and tropical regions. These storms are accompanied by strong wind and heavy rainfall. These storms causes flooding. The heavy rainfall brought about by such storms exert forces on to the soil and loosen them.

The strong winds travel up to 200 kilometers per hour. They exert great forces onto objects that are in their way such as building, vehicles, trees and even people. The broken parts of the objects can cause even more damage to the surroundings when they hit people, or injure them.

Q

What are solid plates and how do they affect us?

A

The earth’s surface is made up of solid plates that continuously move around slowly. When they slide against or over one another, they exert forces onto each other. A great amount of energy is released which can be felt on land as earthquakes or tremors.

Q

What are volcanic eruptions and how do they affect us?

A

The earth moves violently when magma is pushed out from a volcano with great force towards earth’s surface. Energy stored within earth is released of the magam as kinetic, light and heat energy.

Q

What are tsunamis and how do they affect us?

A

Vigorous movement of the ocean floor caused by volcanic eruptions or earthquakes displaces the ocean water which causes tsunamis. The water above the earthquake is displaced. The waves travelling towards the shore then increases greatly. These waves are at a towering height of 40 meters, 23 times the height of man. Therefore, the waves has potential energy. The waves moving towards the shore travel at great speeds. The potential energy is then converted into kinetic energy. The waves finally reach the shore. The waves then strike objects along the shore with great force.
