Types of Figures of Speech in the Bible, pp. 676-678 Flashcards
Anthropomorphism
The eyes of the LORD … his ears … the face of the LORD … Psalm 34
Euphemism
substitution of a less offensive term for an offensive one: “Maybe [Baal] is ‘busy’.” (i.e. relieving himself)
Hypocatastasis
the comparison is implied by direct naming: “The lions’ den is ravaged” (Nahum 2). [The “melting pot” will be drained, perhaps?]
Image
a word picture that makes an abstract idea concrete and reified [the bird in a nest above a raging waterfall reifies serenity, perhaps?]
Metaphor
The imaginative identification of two distinct objects or ideas: God is a sun. God is a shield. These are two metaphors. God is identified with the idea of providing what is beneficial and pleasant. He is also identified with protection, which is obvious. Psalm 84
Metonymy
I think this was misspelled before as “metomymy” [sic!]. The substitution of one word for another. Your throne, o God, will last for ever and ever. Well, what he sits on is not the point, but what he is doing on the throne - reigning. The scepter of justice depicts justice being carried out by the one who holds the scepter. (Psalm 45)
