What is a lab experiment?
An experiment carried out in a controlled lab where all variables are controlled.
Advantage of a lab experiment
They can be replicated.
Disadvantage of a lab experiment
Low ecological validity.
What is a field experiment?
An experiment carried out in a natural environment where the IV is manipulated by the researcher.
Advantage of a field experiment
No demand characteristics.
Disadvantage of a field experiment
Ethical issues (informed consent).
What is a quasi experiment?
An experiment that has an IV based on an already existing thing - cannot be manipulated.
Advantage of a quasi experiment
It can be replicated.
Disadvantage of a quasi experiment
Cannot randomly allocate participants.
What is a natural experiment?
An experiment with the IV is not brought about by the researcher.
Advantage of a natural experiment
Provides opportunities to research things that would usually be unethical.
Disadvantage of a natural experiment
Difficult to replicate (E.g. 9/11).
