Correlations Flashcards
Definition of a correlation
Correlations illustrate the strength and direction of an association between two co-variables.
Definition of co-variables
The variables that are being measured in a correlation.
What is a positive correlation?
When one variable increases so does the other one.
(A increases as B increases).
More than 0.
What is a negative correlation?
When one variable increases the other one decreases.
(A increases as B decreases).
Less than 0.
What is a zero correlation?
No relationship is found between the co-variables.
Equal to 0.
Two advantages of correlations
Gives a starting point to assess patterns between variables.
Not time consuming.
Two disadvantages of correlations
Difficult to establish cause and effect.
Can be misinterpreted.
