Types Of Experiments Flashcards
Laboratory experiments
• Highly controlled environment • randomly allocate participants to different conditions to avoid bias
• experimental group - manipulation of the iv
controlled group - what the results of experimental group will be compared to
Strength of Lab experiments
• High control over extraneous variables
• can easily be repeated
Limitations of lab experiments
• External validity
• lack of generalisability
• demand characteristics
• low mundane realisms
Natural experiments
Researcher measures IV on DV, but researcher has no control over Ir and can not change it
Strength of natural experiments
High external validity because they involve real world study.
Unique research opportunities - provides opportunities for research that may n not have happened due to practical issues.
Limitation of natural experiment
Lack of control
May not be randomly allocated to experimental conditions
Quasi experiments
Has a iv based on existing differences - eg age
Strength of quasi
reliable- can be replicated due to of high levels of control
High internal validity- high control setting
Limitation of quasi
Can not randomly allocate participants there will be confounding variables
Confounding variable
A extraneous variable that hasn’t been controlledso it affects the DV
