Types of Epithelial Tissue Flashcards
Simple Squamous
Blood vessels, Bowman’s capsule (kidney), alveolae
flat plate-like epithelial cells with elongated nucleus
allow diffusion of gases in alveolae, protection
Simple cuboidal
Thyroid follicles, kidney tubules
a single layer of cube-shaped cells with central nucleus
Re-absorption in kidney tubules, protection
Simple Columnar
Stomach and intestine lining, gall bladder
a single layer/long cells with nucleus located at the bottom of the cell Lubrication of gut, absorption in gall bladder
Stratified Squamous
Keratinising – skin, non-keratinising – vagina/oesophagus – multiple layers of flat, plate-like cells with elongated nucleus
protection from abrasion and dehydration in skin
Stratified Cuboidal
Sweat gland -> DUCT lining
multiple layers of cube-shaped cells with central nucleus
Transporting material through sweat glands
Stratified Columnar
Large ducts and salivary gland lining
male urethra and vas deferens
Pseudostratified Columnar
Upper respiratory tract + contains lot of cilia
Appears like multiple layers - actually single layer of cells
Protection + secretion of mucous
