Types of Electromagnetic Waves Flashcards
Radio Waves
Longest wavelengths in the spectrum.
Can be produced by changes in magnetic fields, and electricity, and some other things.
Range from 3 KHz to 3000GHz
Microwaves
Pass through clear solids, like glass or plastics.
Reflect off of metal and opaque solids. Length of wavelength range from 300MHz and 300GHz, or 1mm and 30cm.
Certain frequencies are absorbed by water and cause the molecules to vibrate.
Infrared Radiation
Perceived as radiated heat.
Invisible, longer than visible light.
300 GHz to 400 THz.
Visible Light
Can be seen by human eyes as colour.
400 THz to 800 THz.
Behaves as both a wave and particle.
Red is the longest wavelength, violet is the shortest.
Ultraviolet Radiation
Invisible to humans, though some insects and reptiles can see ultraviolet light. 800 THz to 30 PHz.
Generates heat and can drive photochemical reactions.
X-Rays
High energy required to produce.
30 PHz to 30 EHz.
Gamma Rays
Ouchie
Shortest wavelength
Will kill you
