Big Bang & Edwin Hubble Flashcards
Inflation
The universe expands, cools, and becomes less dense
First stage in the big bang
Post-inflation
The universe is full of ultra-hot plasma with particles like quarks and electrons
Second stage in the big bang
The Dark Ages
Particles form protons, neutrons, and electrons. No source of light yet.
Third stage in the big bang
Recombination
Elements like hydrogen and helium form, first sources of light
Fourth stage in the big bang
Re-ionization
Gravitational attraction collects gases and dust, forming first stars and galaxies
Fifth stage in the big bang
Stars and Galaxies
Stars release heavy elements as they die, which become new stars and planets
Final stage in the big bang
What are the 6 stages
Inflation, Post-inflation, The Dark Ages, Recombination, Re-ionization, Stars and Galaxies.
Who first proposed the idea of the Big Bang?
George Lemaitre
Who discovered the expansion of the universe?
Edwin Hubble in the 1920s, using a technique from Henrietta Levitl
How was the expansion of the universe discovered?
By measuring distances between remote objects in the sky. Edwin Hubble used the 2.5 Hooked Telescope to prove Andromeda Nebula extends past the Milky Way Galaxy.
