Four main economic sectors
Primary sector:
- Raw materials e.g farming, deforestation
- Finland’s famous for its pulp industry
- Produces €17bn in forestry p/a
Secondary sector:
- Manufacturing raw materials
Tertiary sector:
- Providing services to others
- E.g taxi drivers, restaurants
Quaternary sector:
- IT software and R&D
Types of employment
Permanent:
- Employees who have fixed contracts
- 35hrs per week and 2yr contract
Self employed:
- People who run their own business
Temporary/Seasonal work:
- Agency staff and volunteers
- Short term contracts e.g helping tourists
Zero-hours:
- Workers may get 0-40hrs per week
Illegal work:
- Done in poor working conditions
- Migrant workers are susceptible to this
- E.g Qatar using migrants to build 2022 World Cup stadium
Economic activity on health
- People in the primary sector have a higher risk of poor health due to carcinogens
- Food desert places are linked to poor regions e.g New Orleans #1 in USA
- Majority of population lives in poverty
Factors determining life expectancy
- Gender
- Income
- Occupation
- Education
- Access to healthcare
- Lifestyle choices
E.g Life expectancy in UK is 77M & 82F
Education and inequality
- Educational provisions and outcomes are unequal in the UK
- Private schools may have 15 math teachers while other schools don’t
- Children in rich families usually get better grades due to tutoring and paid tools
- People in primary sector receive lower wages than other sectors
Measuring Inequality
IMD = Index of Multiple Deprivation:
- Income
- Employment
- Education & training
- Health / Disability
- Crimes
- Housing
- Environment
1 = Most deprived
32,844 = Least deprived
Fact = Number of people visiting food banks in UK rose by 13% in 2018
Fact = Some jobs in London pay allowance to teachers due to cost of living
