What is Fronto-Temporal dementia?
Dramatic changes in personality, behaviour and thought process.
Affects more women than men (40-60)
Symptoms of FTD
Unpredictable behaviour
Loss of motor skills
Muscle weakness
Lack of insight
What is creutzfeld-Jacob’s disease?
Very rare caused by proteinaceous prions. Can live in the body for years without symptoms.
Very rapid, progressive neurological disease
Humans and animals
What is vascular dementia?
Strokes can cause changes in mental functioning.
Brain damage from a major stroke can be permanent.
What is Korsakoff’s syndrome?
A brain disorder caused by a lack of thiamine.
Affects nervous system including the brain.
Usually associated with alcohol use
What is Parkinson’s Disease Dementia
A progressive illness that affects the brains ability to control movement, resulting in tremors, shakes difficulty walking
What is creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease?
A very rare disease that causes dementia. Appears to have a genetic link
What is Early Stage of Dementia?
Affects mental abilities, moods and emotions, behaviours and physical abilities
Mild forgetfulness
Difficulty learning new things
poor judgment
Mild coordination problems
What is second stage dementia?
Memory loss increases
Disorientation to time and place
Loss of impulse
Personality changes
What is late stage dementia?
Loss of ability to remember, communicate verbally, cannot function independently
Nonverbal communication
Incontenience
