Types of debridement and dressings Flashcards
What is a natural form of debridebment?
autolytic (phagocytes and enzymes go to work)
What is mechanical debridement?
think pulsed lavage, wet-to-dry gauze dressing
- for wounds with moist necrotic tissue; however this method can remove some healthy tissue as well so contraindicated for clean, granulated wounds
What wound dressing(s) might be used for a wound with minimal exudate?
hydrocolloids
foams
T/F: Transparent films are a good dressing choice for thin, fragile skin.
false
What are alginate dressings used for?
more moderate-heavily exudating wounds
- absorb a tonnnn, can fill dead space with these also
When would you use a continuous dry gauze dressing?
for heavily exudating wounds
When would you use a wet to dry gauze dressing?
for mechanical debridement
When would you use a continuous moist dressing?
to protect clean wounds, as well as promote autolytic debridement
How often should wheelchair push-ups be performed?
every 15 minutes
Would a hydrocolloid or hydrogel dresssing be appropriate for a continuously draining wound?
neither - only appropriate for mildly exudating wounds
What are the different types of dressings? (6)
foam hydrocolloid hydrogel gauze alginate transparent films
